Air quality update:  Moving forward we will treat this like we do extreme cold or rainy days.  We will make that call on a daily basis, and always err on the side of student safety. If the air quality is still unhealthy, we will still have the students go to the cafeteria or gym first thing in the morning.

_____________________________________________________

The smoke from surrounding wildfires has caused our air quality to dip into the "Very Unhealthy" category. We will still have school, but recesses and PE will all be indoors. Regular recesses will be in classrooms. Lunch recess will be in the gym. I have spoken with Mr. Hatrock, and he will have PE in the gym so our students will still be getting some activity.

At this time, it looks like we will be doing this through at least Wednesday. Obviously, we will continue to monitor the situation and adjust as necessary.

I know this is not the best way to start the school year, but keeping students safe doesn't come with a schedule. Thank you for your flexibility and positive attitude. This too shall pass.

Congratulations to Mr. Moon for receiving a $1,500 Grant from Kootenai Electric Coop.  With this grant, Mr. Moon has purchased a 3D printer for students and teachers to prototype projects.  Students will learn about various 3D modeling computer software applications that they can use to design and print their creations.  Students will also be printing prosthetic hands through the e-Nable program. There is a whole world of possibilities just waiting to be found.

The Idaho STEM Action Center has awarded North Idaho STEM Charter Academy a grant in the amount of $1,298.68 to purchase the Foundations in Personal Finance curriculum. This curriculum will support the new Financial Literacy course that will be offered to 11th and 12th grade students starting next year.

At North Idaho STEM Charter, we believe that skills such as innovation, entrepreneurship, and advanced mathematics are key benefits for our students. However without the ability to balance accounts, plan and fund future goals, and actively manage finances the chance of future success is limited. We believe that financial literacy is critical to future success for our graduates. We are excited to offer this course next year!

Cd'a Press:  Those two simple, down-home words of expression — thank you — still have a powerful way of bringing folks together.

After 9-year-old James Hamby saw an Idaho State Police officer drive past him a month ago, he decided to act on his intuition of writing ISP officers a letter of thanks for their service.  Full article at: http://cdapress.com/news/local_news/article_d6110058-e8d4-51ab-8635-c6a43306b82d.html

CdA Press:  NASA selected North Idaho STEM Charter Academy to participate in its CubeSat Space Mission in June 2017. The school is the only high school to be selected, and one of 20 institutions nationwide that will get to design and construct a CubeSat — a class of research spacecraft also called nanosatellites — over the next three years.

“It’s fantastic,” said North Idaho STEM director Scott Thomson. “Producing real world solutions is what this school is about and it doesn’t get more real than this.”

Our high school CubeSAT satellite team has been selected as one of only 20 institutions in the WORLD. Indeed, we are the ONLY HIGH SCHOOL IN THE NATION that has been selected to send our Cube Satellite to space. We already have a launch date of June 2017. This is a tremendous opportunity for our students. As one of our technical advisors said: other schools may have sports teams, but they don’t have a satellite!!!!
